WHEREAS, Thousands more have been seriously injured by the earthquake; and WHEREAS, Thousands more are still missing among the rubble that was once the thriving central section of Mexico City; and WHEREAS, Many Chicagoans with families and friends in the devastated area are still anxiously awaiting word on the welfare of their loved ones; and WHEREAS, An outpouring of support from around the world has followed in the wake of the destruction in Mexico City; and WHEREAS, Mexican authorities have issued a call for financial support to help the continuing search for survivors, to aid in the clean-up operation and to help rebuild the city; now, therefore.
Be It Resolved, That the Mayor and the City Council assembled here this 24th day of September, 1985, do hereby urge all citizens to aid the good people of Mexico City by making financial donations to authorized Chicago-area fundraising agencies; and Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the Consul General of Mexico in Chicago.
Alderman D. Davis moved to Suspend the Rules Temporarily to permit immediate consideration of and action upon the foregoing proposed resolution. The motion Prevailed.
On motion of Alderman D. Davis, seconded by Aldermen Santiago, Smith, Burke and Langford, the foregoing proposed resolution was Adopted, unanimously, by a rising vote after a moment of silent prayer.
