A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS the arm ed forces o f the United States m anifest our strength a n d our determination to m aintain our n a
tional freedom and security; and WHEREAS members of the active and reserve components o f the arm ed forces of the United States are engaged in pro grams designed to demonstrate to all the peoples of the world our purpose to u p
hold and defend the free w ay o f life; and WHEREAS the year 1957 m arks the tenth anniversary of the unification o f our armed forces under the N ation al Security Act of 1947; a n d WHEREAS it is appropriate that we dedicate one day each year to paying special tribute to the m em bers of our armed forces, and that on such day the armed forces demonstrate to the people of the Nation their operations and ca pabilities; and WHEREAS it is also appropriate that , e public be invited to visit on th at day. within the limits permitted by seajirity requirements, the posts, camps, .stations, bases, vessels, armories, reserve centers, and other facilities:

I also invite the Governors of the States, Territories, and possessions of the U nited States to provide fo r the observ ance o f Arm ed Forces D a y each year in such m anner as w ill afford an oppor tunity fo r the people of the U nited States to become better acquainted with their arm ed forces, both active and reserve.
A n d I call upon my fellow citizens to display the flag o f the U nited States on A rm ed Forces D ay, in recognition of the sacrifice and devotion to duty of the members o f the arm ed forces.
