WHEREAS, Th e Universit y o f Chicag o begin s observin g it s centennia l year on October 3,1991; and WHEREAS, The University, founded b y John D , Rockefeller i n 1891 , with W i l l i a m R a i n e y H a r p e r a s i t s firs t p r e s i d e n t , i s a p r i v a t e , nondenominational, coeducationa l institutio n o f highe r learnin g an d research; an d WHEREAS, The founding o f the Universit y o f Chicago i s one of the mos t important event s i n th e histor y o f America n educatio n becaus e thi s institution ha s shape d th e outloo k an d expectation s o f America n highe r education; an d WHEREAS, For th e pas t century, the Universit y o f Chicago ha s been o n the leadin g edg e o f discover y an d researc h becaus e o f it s willingnes s t o challenge conventiona l thinking , it s commitmen t t o explor e uncharte d territory, it s rigorou s s t a n d a r d s , excellen t p r o g r a m s an d fierc e independence; and WHEREAS, Thi s University s facult y achieve d th e first controlle d self sustained nuclear chain reaction.
