Im portant. Although the apportioned classified civil service is by law located only in Washington, D. C., it neverthe less includes only about half of the Fed eral Civilian positions in the District of Columbia. Positions in local post offices, customs districts and other field services outside of the District of Columbia which are subject to the Civil Service Act are filled almost wholly by persons who are local residents of the general community in which the vacancies exist.
