America that served as a bright beacon for his own grandfather nearly 100 years ago and a magnet for the 50 new citizens, from 25 different countries, to whom the Mayor administered the oath of citizenship on election day. As the United States begins its transition to a new administration, Mayor Emanuel issued a challenge to the president-elect as well as the new United States Congress to work with cities across the country and to listen to and respect the voices of Americans who believe that "if you work hard you shouldnt have to raise your children in poverty or choose between a second job and your childs education". Our city, our state and our nation have a bright future when we hold true to the values of who we are, the Mayor declared, and the sacrifices and success of Comptroller-elect Mendoza, Senator-elect Duckworth, Representative-elect Krishnamoorthi and States Attorney-elect Foxx are a celebration of our diversity and a testament that the American dream still shines bright.
