WHEREAS
the X V H th Olym pic Games of the m odem era w ill be held in Rome, Italy, beginning August 25 and ending September 11, 1960; the W in ter Games will be held a t Squaw Valley, California, from February 19 to M arch I, 1960; and the P a n Am erican G am es w ill be held in Chicago, Illinois, from August 27 to September 7, 1959; and WHEREAS in these games m en and women of more th an seventy nations, and of many races, creeds, and cultural backgrounds, will be brought together to match their athletic abilities against one another under established rules of sports manship which offer a n equal oppor tunity for all; and WHEREAS the Olym pic and the P a n American Games of past years have con tributed in a unique w a y to greater understanding and m utual respect among the peoples of the w orld; and WHEREAS the United States Olym pic Association is presently engaged in o b Bing maximum support fo r the teams representing the United States at these three athletic events; and WHEREAS the Congress by a joint resolution approved June 4, 1958, has authorized and requested the President of the United States to issue a p roclam aoj1 designating the week beginning ober 13, 1958, as N ation al Olym pic NOW, THEREFORE, I, D W I G H T D.

W H E R E A S our people in increasing numbers are taking p art in boating ac tivities on the waters of the Nation, and it is estimated th at approxim ately tw enty-eight miUion wiU participate in such activities d uring 1958; and W H E R E A S safety is essential fo r the fu ll enjoyment of boating, and safe bo at in g practices wiU result in the saving of m any lives and in the avoidance o f in
juries and property dam age; and W H E R E A S the Congress, by a joint resolution approved June 4,1958, has a u
thorized and requested the President of the U nited States to proclaim annually the week which includes July 4 as N a

I urge boating organizations, the boat industry, Governm ent agencies, and all other organizations and all individuals interested in boating, to join in the ob servance o f N ation al Safe B oating W eek ; and I ask them to do their utmost during that week and throughout the year to m ake boating a safe and enjoy able activity.
I also invite the Governors o f the States, Territories, and possessions o f the U nited States to provide fo r the observ ance o f N ation al S a fe B oating W eek in C o n tin u e d on p. 4027
