ACTION:

The U.S. Codex Office is sponsoring a public meeting on May 11, 2021. The objective of the public meeting is to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft United States U.S.
positions to be discussed at the 52nd Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives CCFA of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The U.S.
Manager for Codex Alimentarius and the Acting Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs recognize the importance of providing interested parties the opportunity to obtain background information on the 52nd Session of the CCFA and to address items on the agenda.
DATES: The public meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EDT.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:

Background Codex was established in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Through adoption of food standards, codes of practice, and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments, Codex seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.
The Terms of Reference of the Codex Committee on Food Additives are:
a To establish or endorse permitted maximum levels for individual food additives;
b to prepare priority lists of food additives for risk assessment by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives;
c to assign functional classes to individual food additives;
d to recommend specifications of identity and purity for food additives for adoption by the Commission;
e to consider methods of analysis for the determination of additives in food;
and f to consider and elaborate standards or codes for related subjects such as the labelling of food additives when sold as such.
The CCFA is hosted by China. The United States attends the CCFA as a member country of Codex.
