By virtue of the authority vested in me by section 207 of the Independent Offices Appropriation Act, 1949, approved April 20,1948 Public Law 491,80th Congress, and as President of the United States, it Is hereby ordered that, until such time as appropriate general regulations are pre scribed with respect thereto, the payment of salaries and compensation of persons subject to the provisions of section 207 of the aforesaid act who are employed by the Federal Government outside the con tinental United States or in Alaska shall be made by the several executive depart ments, independent establishments, and corporations in accordance with the reg ulations and practices in effect in their respective organizations immediately prior to April 20, 1948: Provided, how ever, That in no case shall the rates of pay exceed by more than 25 per centum the rates of pay for the same or similar services of persons employed by the Government in the continental United States: And Provided further, That no such salary or compensation shall exceed the maximum provided by the Classifica tion Act of 1923, as amended.
This order shall be effective as of April 20, 1948, and shall be published in the F ederal R eg ister .
