Pursuant to the authority vested in the Secretary of Agriculture by the Farm Products Inspection item recurring in the annual appropriation acts for the United States Department of Agricul ture, and the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 Title II, Pub. Law 733, 79th Cong., 7 U. S. C. and Sup. 414, the stand ards for grades of carcass beef, of veal and calf carcasses, and of lamb carcasss and yarling mutton and mutton car casses, heretofore adopted under said Farm Products Inspection item as the official United States standards for grades of such carcasses, are hereby or dered to be amended and published as follows :

53.101 Definition of terms. For the purpose of 53.107 to 63.117, inclusive, the following terms shall be construed, respectively, to mean:
a Veal carcass. A veal carcass is one which is derived from an immature, milkfed, bovine animal usually norover three months of age.
b Calf carcass. A calf carcass is one which is derived from an immature, bovine animal which for a considerable time has susbsisted in part or entirely on feeds other than milk.
c Lamb carcass. A lamb carcass is one derived from young animals of the oyine species of either sex. The maxi mum age limit is approximately 12
months.
d Yearling mutton carcass. A year ling mutton carcass is one derived from an animal of the ovine species of either sex that has passed the lamb age and has lost to an appreciable extent the characteristics which are peculiar to lamb, but has not reached, at time of slaughter, that state of maturity when it could be properly classed as mutton. The age limits for this group are from 12 to 24 months.
e Mutton carcass. A mutton carcass is one derived from a mature animal of the ovine species of either sex. The minimum age of sheep which produce Continued on p. 13997
