OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS the Army of the United States is a bulwark of the Nations de fense in war and a faithful servant of the people in time of peace; and
WHEREAS, currently, tasks vital to the final establishment of a durable peace are entrusted to the Army and are being performed at home and across the seas; and WHEREAS Senate Concurrent Resolu tion 5, 75th Congress, 1st Session, which Was agreed to by the House of Repre sentatives on March 16, 1937 50 Stat.
1108, provides:
T h a t April 6 of each year be recognized by th e S en a te an d th e H ouse of R epresentatives o f th e U n ited S ta tes of Am erica as Army Day, an d t h a t th e P resid en t of th e U n ited S tates b e requested, as Com m ander in Chief, t o or der m ilita ry u n its th rou gh ou t th e U n ited S ta tes to assist civic bodies in appropriate celeb ra tio n t o su ch ex ten t as h e m ay deem advisable; to issu e a proclam ation each year d eclarin g April 6 as Army Day, an d in su ch proclam ation s to in v ite th e Governors o f th e various S ta tes to issu e Army Day proclam a tio n s : P ro vid ed , T h a t in th e ev en t April 6
fa lls o n Su n day, th e follow in g M onday sh a ll b e recognized as Army Day:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, HARRY S.
TRUMAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Wednes day, April 6, 1949, as Army Day; and I
invite the Governors of the -various States, Territories, and possessions to issue proclamations for the celebration of that day in such manner as to render ap propriate honor to the Army of the United States in all its component partsthe Organized Reserves, the Na tional Guard, and the Regular Army and to the millions of Army veterans who have returned to civilian pursuits.
As Commander in Chief of the Armed -Forces of the United States, I desire that Army Commands throughout the Nation mark the designated day with appro priate ceremonies and cooperate with civil authorities and civic bodies in suit able celebration.
I commend to the consideration of my fellow citizens the reflection that our Army is a protector of those values and
principles upon which our society is founded.

Since the fortunes of our Nation and the peace of the world depend in part upon the skill, the gallantry, and the uncompromising devotion of the Army of the United States, let us all, on the day appointed, accord to our Army the signal recognition that it deserves.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have here unto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

Under authority of 6.1 d of Execu tive Order 9830, and with the concurrence of the Department of Agriculture, the provision of 6.111 1 1 by which three positions of Assistant Administra tor, Farmers Home Administration, were excepted from the competitive service, is hereby revoked. As amended, 6.111 1
