COMMUNICATIONS, ETC
On motion of Alderman Cdrdenas, seconded by Aldermen Brookins, Moore, OShea and Sposato, the foregoing resolution was Adopted by yeas and nays as follows:
Yeas - Aldermen La Spata, Hopkins, Dowell, King, Hairston, Sawyer, Mitchell, Harris, Beale, Sadlowski Garza, Thompson, C6rdenas, Quinn, Burke, Lopez, Coleman, Moore, Curtis, OShea, Taylor, Brookins, Rodriguez, Tabares, Scott, Sigcho-Lopez, Maldonado, Burnett, Ervin, Taliaferro, Reboyras, Cardona, Rodriguez-Sanchez, Austin, Ramirez-Rosa, Villegas, Mitts, Sposato, Nugent, Vasquez, Napolitano, Reilly, Smith, Tunney, Gardiner, Cappleman, Martin, Osterman, Silverstein 48.
Nays
-
None.
Alderman Thompson moved to reconsider the foregoing vote. The motion was lost.
At this point in the proceedings, the Honorable Lori Lightfoot, Mayor, rose and joined with the members of the City Council in congratulating St. Ethelreda School on winning the state chess championship. Declaring Shakira Luster, Trechelle Williams and lmani Hall as "three incredible young women who made their school proud", Mayor Lightfoot noted that each of these students finished in the Top Ten at the state tournament in Peoria and with guidance from Chess Coach Eric Luster, brought home the state championship trophy to the Auburn Gresham community. Welcomed by the faculty and student body of St. Ethelreda at an uncharacteristic pep rally held in their honor, Mayor Lightfoot stated that their state championship trophy will now take its place in the schools trophy case alongside the others marking athletic achievements. ln celebrating this immense accomplishment for St. Ethelreda, we are reminded that only a decade ago the school was on the verge of being closed, the Mayor observed, and today its success extends across competitions and the classroom, where 100 percent of their students are accepted into their top-choice high school. "Whatever their next move", the Mayor quipped, "these three young women and the students of this school will continue to make their community and our entire city proud." Mayor Lightfoot then left the rostrum and strode to the commissioners gallery where she presented St. Ethelreda School Eighth Grade Chess Team members Shakira Luster, Trechelle Williams and lmani Hall, Principal Dr. Denise Spells and Coach Eric Luster with parchment copies of the congratulatory resolution.
